Most eye tests take between 15 to 40 minutes, during which time your optometrist will discuss any concerns you may be having, assess your eye health, and determine your glasses prescription if required. Contact lenses may be discussed and trialled. As part of your eye health check conditions such as cataract, glaucoma, macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy will be checked for routinely, as well as many other eye health problems.

Eye tests are bulk-billed to Medicare (subject to Medicare coverage and conditions) with no out of pocket expense. Some types of consultations are not covered by Medicare, including some contact lens consultations. Contact lens consultations will vary from $30 to $150 for a series of consultations. Ask your optometrist for a price at your first visit. People of any age can have an eye exam, including young children. They do not need to be able to read. If knowledge of English is very limited then it is best to bring an interpreter.
